Getting perfect on Cross Diamonds is driving me nuts!
Here's my analysis. Which assumption is wrong, or what am I missing?
1) I need to transform 4 blacks -> whites 2) That means I need to transform 4 reds -> blacks to replace them. 3) With only 8 moves, I'll either need to transform: a) R-B-B-R twice b) Rx3 - Bx4 - R once. (The Rx3 don't have to be linear... could be a T) 4) With 8 moves, and 4 reds off the board plus 4 white spaces empty, I can't just transform stones and move them. I'll have to transform as many in place as possible. 5) Since the reds will be transformed into blacks, it means I have exactly 8 moves -- placing 4 reds on black spaces, and moving 4 stones (either black or transformed white) into the white spaces. I can't place any stones off the pattern because I don't have moves to shuttle them back. 6) Because of the way the center white cross is shaped, I can't transform all the white stones in place -- I will have to transform some from their current place in the pattern and then move them. 7) To place red stones in the pattern I will have to move black stones out of their way. The only place to move them is the white cross...
I can't see a way to accomplish this in 8 moves given everything above. What am I missing?

An excellent question! And there IS something you are missing, though your analysis is otherwise pretty much spot-on.
Here's the thing - it is possible for some of the black stones created in the transformation to end up in the proper location for future transformations.
That is, you place two sunstones around two black stones, and create BWWB. If one of those B stones is in the right location, you can then transform it into a W stone - and that saves you one move.
Since I'm supposed to be spoiler-free here, I'll give these hints: 1 - All transformations are horizontal. 2 - You need 2 transformations of 2 stones each.
Good luck! The next update will include a limited number of "solution tokens" which you can use to view solutions to puzzles you get stuck on.
